Dr. Sharon G. Feldman

Sharon G. Feldman is Associate Dean for Division I (Arts, Languages, and Cultures). She holds the William Judson Gaines Chair in Modern Foreign Languages and serves as Professor of Spanish and Catalan Studies in the Department of Latin American, Latino, & Iberian Studies.

With a specific focus on theatre and performance from the Iberian Peninsula, both modern and contemporary, her scholarly contributions include Els límits del silenci: La censura del teatre català durant el franquisme [The limits of silence: The censorship of Catalan drama during the Franco regime], co-authored with Francesc Foguet, and In the Eye of the Storm: Contemporary Theater in Barcelona (Catalan edition: A l’ull de l’huracà: Teatre català contemporani), for which she was awarded the prestigious Serra d’Or Critics’ Prize for Research in Catalan Studies. Her first book, Allegories of Dissent: The Theater of Agustín Gómez Arcos (Spanish edition: Alegorías de la disidencia: El teatro de Agustín Gómez Arcos), was recognized as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. Additionally, she has published the volume Barcelona Plays: A Collection of New Works by Catalan Playwrights, translated and edited with Marion P. Holt. 

Throughout her career, she has held visiting appointments at institutions that include the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (Mercè Rodoreda Chair in Catalan Studies), the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona (the Barcelona conservatory of theatre and dance), where she was as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer.

Currently, she is in the final stages of completing a new book that examines the North American trajectory of the theatre of renowned Catalan playwright and poet Àngel Guimerà (1845-1924). The book will shed light on how Guimerà’s theatrical works, adapted into English, enjoyed a continuous presence on stages and screens throughout the United States and Canada during the early twentieth century. In connection with her research endeavors, she is also an accomplished translator of contemporary Catalan drama, having rendered into English over 30 Catalan plays, thus contributing to the dissemination of Catalan literature on an international stage. Her work has earned her the distinction of “corresponding member abroad” of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona [Royal Academy of Letters of Barcelona]. She is also a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and serves on the advisory board of the CRAE (Centre de Recerca de les Arts Escèniques) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

As Associate Dean, she plays a vital role in supporting faculty in the arts, languages, and cultures. Her responsibilities also include overseeing the hiring of contingent faculty and managing curriculum changes within the School of Arts & Sciences.
